The Rockefeller Research Laboratories at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is one of the leading centers for scientists and clinicians pursuing research in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, immunology, developmental therapy and clinical investigation. The new 375,000 square foot building has eleven floors of laboratories, animal facilities, classrooms, a conference center, a library, a 343-seat auditorium, and an underground parking garage. Closed-circuit simulcasting capabilities link the auditorium to several of the conference rooms.

Designed to facilitate scientific interaction among the investigators who work here, each research floor is divided into 32 primary laboratories, arranged around the perimeter of the building so that each has daylight. These laboratories are entirely generic and can be recombined into suites of varying size, discipline or function as programmed needs change. Each floor is served by a central core, where controlled temperature environments and special equipment required for advanced biomedical investigation are shared. These facilities are also standardized and stacked on each floor.

A clustered office concept for investigators serves to reinforce the generic approach. This arrangement ensures cost-effective operation for today’s research programs and promises to be readily adaptable to future needs, as the facilities can be updated or altered with little or no disruption of ongoing activities.
