East Midtown Plaza (1974)
New York, NY

748 UNITS • MITCHELL-LAMA PROGRAM, NYC HPD

Constructed in two stages, the 750-unit complex is composed of a pair of towers that are 22 and 27 stories, and low-rise duplex buildings. The diagonal corners designed into the tower blocks result in some interesting configurations and exposures for the living rooms, as well as softening the impact of the development on the Second Avenue streetscape. Balconies and exterior walkways break up the façades of the duplex components. The landscaped plaza that links the buildings creates a pleasant urban park. Completed in 1974, the project received the Municipal Arts Society Certificate of Merit in 1972, the New York Association of Architects Award in 1973, and the Bard Award from the City of New York in 1973.
