The Baruch College Library and Technology Center realizes the first part of a master plan designed to introduce new library facilities onto the College’s urban campus. To create the new library, the firm completely renovated an 1894 industrial building designed in Italian Renaissance style. The 330,000 square foot, nine-story library which houses 525,000 volumes also includes a conference center, a computing / technology center, and a media center.
A grand staircase in the two-story entrance lobby leads to the main floor of the library which is organized around a five-story skylit atrium created from an existing lightwell. The design of the Baruch Library achieved the college’s commitment to establishing a centralized campus, which had formerly been housed in an unlinked series of converted office spaces with no central library. The building serves as an interactive center where students can congregate in informal groups or study independently.
